Bourg-en-Bresse and the Monastery of Brou
The Royal Monastery of Brou, a flamboyant masterpiece commissioned by Margaret of Austria, holds three magnificent marble tombs and colourful stained-glass windows: an almost timeless date. Around it, Bourg-en-Bresse spreads its pedestrian heart, half-timbered houses and lively Wednesday-morning markets, perfect for a shared coffee before tasting a cream-sauce chicken.
Pérouges, a town of stone
Perched on a hill above the Ain valley, Pérouges is one of France’s loveliest medieval towns. Uneven cobbles, stone houses and a covered main street make a cinematic setting. You walk together, sit down for a sugar galette, the local speciality, then let yourselves be carried along by the silence of the ramparts, especially at the end of the day when the tourists are gone.
Gourmet Bresse
Bresse spoils its visitors: the famous poultry with fine skin and tricolour badge, creamy cheeses, gratins, lively markets and, in autumn, Les Glorieuses, the grand show of the finest birds. On the cultural side, the Ambronay festival makes the abbey vibrate in September. On Lyad, members from the Ain share their favourite addresses; it is up to you to find someone to discover them with.
